It’s official. The best street meat in Canada is the elk smokies at the Banff Farmers Market. Made by a local farmer who sells all kinds of elk and bison products, the meat is amazing. I over heard someone who had recently enjoyed the elk steaks ask the farmer “what do you do to make it taste so good?” His response, “I just feed them grass…” So simple, and yet so good. The sort of thing that you only get from a local grocer or market.
The market is one of my favourite things in Banff. The fresh produce (just ask Toby about the corn that he eats by the ton), the bacon or olive infused bread, the traditional Belgian waffles, the artists and photographers, the guys selling walking sticks, hula hoops or tie dyed shirts; it’s all amazing. And the backdrop of Norquay, Sulphur and Cascade mountains doesn’t hurt.
If you’re in Banff any Wednesday this month, make sure you check it out. For more info on the various vendors, check out Real Banff.
